As many top wood engravers of the 20C revival worked partially or in some cases pretty much exclusively in trade publications, I have recently been exploring this area and acquiring a few illustrated trade publication titles from the 30s and 40s.
They are great to collect because they are not expensive. Such lovely books and such exquisite wood engravings in so many variable styles, from the traditional approach of Joan Hassall, to the dramatic stylisation of John Farleigh in two colours.
My favourites to date, still a lot of exploration to be done… Agnes Miller Parker, they are so stunning. Through the Woods seems to me a lot better in the printing than her second title with H.E. Bates, Between Two Rivers.
And Clare Leighton. Four Hedges is a beautiful production. A separate blog entry about her.
