E. Fitch Daglish (1892-1966) was a master wood engraver who illustrated classics and also both wrote and illustrated a range of natural history titles, an area in which he lectured (he was also an expert dog breeder, producing books and judging at Crufts). Among the titles he wrote and illustrated were a range of bird books from 1926-1948, many of these trade titles for J.M. Dent. This title is probably the first of these bird titles, a limited edition. He is invariably mentioned in histories of the 20C. wood engraving revival and Clare Leighton pointed out that he obtains his effects using only the fine engraving tool, not a mix of instruments, which marks his style out when compared with some others.
