Ethelbert White (1891-1972) was a painter, illustrator, wood engraver and poster designer, He was an early member of the Society of Wood Engravers and a founder member of the English Wood Engraving Society in 1925. He led a bohemian lifestyle including wandering in a gypsy caravan.
He illustrated a half dozen Beaumont Press titles – this is the first and shows a very early wood engraving style from him.
Eclogues, A Book of Poems, Herbert Read
This small (7.625″ x 5.25″) hardcover was hand-printed on Cyril W. Beaumont’s press in 1919. This is #105 from a limited printing of 200 copies. The decorations are by Ethelbert White. The cover is sunned toward the borders. There is a small stain to the front cover. The gilt on the spine is faded, but legible. The inside is near fine, with a small number of spot stains, but no significant stains, no scuffs, tears or creases. The binding is tight. All art and text are as new. First edition.
Herbert Read 1893 – 1968, art critic and historian primarily. Also poet, literary critic and philosopher. These are early autobiographical poems, his first collection, in an Imagist style.
