The Blakeney Press – an individual hobby hand press

Edward Henry Blakeney (15 August 1869 – 1955) was an English classical scholar and poet, born in Mitcham. He formed a private press 1908 in Ely, and printed little pamphlets. He moved to Winchester and there was an interlude but he resumed from 1925 and continued through to the early 1950s. He did everything himself and the products are very much the back room pamphlet style.

This one is from 1925. Four Gnostic Psalms.  One of just 30 copies printed in Garamond type on Old Drury laid paper. Stapled into overlapping green paper wrappers, titled in black on the front.

This copy came from the library of poet, author and critic Sir Edmund Gosse (1849-1928).

Frankly a bit difficult to get very excited about this little pamphlet, I have to be honest!
